Bethany Fire Department - Central Fire Station Expansion and Renovations
Bethany, Oklahoma

In February of 2007, MAPC’s Team was selected by the City of Bethany to provide preliminary design services for an expansion and renovation of their existing Central Fire Station located on North Rockwall Avenue.   McCool and Associates, P.C., provided assistance to the owner in developing the program and completed a preliminary design study and draft report in May.  The study and report presented a detailed listing of the needed additions and renovations and a narrative providing the basis for each of the needs and a proposed scope of work for each need.   This detailed study provided the basis for a detailed costs estimate prediction of the capitol funds which the city would need to complete the project.  The city plans to present the project to the community for a bond election in the fall of 2007.

The existing central fire station was designed by the architectural firm of Locke,  Miner & Smith, Inc of Oklahoma City  in 1963 and construction was completed by LippCo Construction, Inc. in 1964.  The International Style station design as recognized by the American Institute of Steel Construction for it's exposed architectural use of steel framing.

Expansion and Renovation work will include:

  • Addition of a third level housing new mechanical systems, high angle training aids,  storage and possible physical training spaces.  New vaulted standing seam metal roofing will provide a long term,  low maintenance addition.
  • Three additional apparatus bays will provide much needed space for operations and storage space for an existing educational trailer.  One existing and one new bay will provide space for support functions such as decontamination, turnout gear extractor & dryer,  cascade systems,  a work shop area,  hose dryer and storage and turnout gear lockers.
  •  A new training room will be added onto the south end of the existing station.  The new training room will provide space for 40  to 50 persons in row seating and 24 firefighters in table and chairs for training.  The space will serve community meeting needs (such as the local boy scout troop) and will have current technology training aids such as and overhead LCD projection systems and DVD support.
  • Renovation of the existing training room will provide 2 new officers quarters providing rank separation and privacy.
  • General renovation of the Fire Chief's and Fire Marshall's offices will provide and updated interior and well as electrical system and Ethernet support.
  • A new dispatch office,  bay toilet and laundry will be added and airlocks will connect the bay to the quarters to contain airborne contamination from the bay.
  • Renovation of the second level quarters will provide an updated and expanded kitchen,  dining and dayroom space.  Existing bathrooms will be relocated and expanded and a new locker space will be provided.
  • Renovation of the apparatus bay will provide a new floor drain system and radiant heat system.  Bay floors will be dyed and polished concrete.
  • General renovations to the existing building will include a new larger emergency generator,  new mechanical systems,  new lighting systems, new fire sprinkler and alarm system, new insulated glazing system replacing all existing exterior windows and storefront,
  • Site work will include expansion of the apparatus aprons, addition of new staff parking,  addition of a new Murrah building memorial,  a new monument sign along Rockwall Ave.  and new landscaping throughout the property

Projected development costs of the project are estimated at about three million.
