Tulsa City County Health Department The Tulsa City County Health Department Central Regional Center is housed in a remodeled grocery store at 3rd and Utica in Tulsa. After moving into this facility only 3 years earlier, the facility was completely full with a higher than predicted patient use. Under the pressure of this unexpected growth they decided to consider expansion of the services into an adjacent retail clothing outlet of approximately the same size. MAPC was enlisted to study the potential of the expansion. MAPC staff assisted the staff in development of a new space program for the expanded facility and then developed preliminary schematic plans. The design included relocation of some of the existing departments as well as the addition of several functions from TCCHD's other locations. Careful consideration was given to organizing the departments treating sickness from those providing preventative and well patient services. Patient access and waiting areas to departments serving sexually transmitted disease and tuberculosis were distinctly separate from those providing childhood inoculations and pregnancy services. Interview stations for each area was separate but shared a common central file space. Most challenging was the treatment of the offset in floor elevation between the two existing buildings. Using steps and ramps inside and a the new central entry on the exterior, MAPC successfully blended the two buildings and developed a clear and notable exterior aesthetic.
