McKinley Elementary School
6703 East King
Tulsa, Oklahoma 74115
As part of a bond funding package approved by the voters in 1996, McKinley
Elementary was programmed to receive a new Media/Library Center and two
classrooms in a single addition to the existing 40+ year old facility. The
existing library had been moved into the lunch room years before to free-up
space for additional classrooms. Along with the new Media Center and classrooms,
McKinley received a new technology package
that included computers, network installation, communications and cable TV and
the addition of the necessary electrical and communications network cabling.
This allowed instructors the ability to better communicate with the
administration, schedule activities and use CD servers and internet resources to
deliver video support to special instructional activities. The Media Center
features a staff workroom for managing and mending materials as well as a
control staff station, teachers’ resource center, group reading center,
computer resources center with 6 stations and shelf space for over 12,000 books.
Natural light is provided by a series of high windows permitting light but
limiting visual connection to the adjacent playgrounds. The classrooms were each
more than 725 s.f. with more than 20’ of built-in cabinets and storage, and
natural lighting and operable windows for natural ventilation when the weather
permits.MAPC met weekly with a site committee to develop the
functional program of each of the facilities. The committee was involved in
every decision from concept to selection of finishes resulting in an addition
that was seamlessly integrated into the existing facility and exceeded the
program directives set out by the administrati on. This project was completed on
time and within budget.
